What an exciting evening of racing last night! Canyon ZCC did the double again (check out Round 1) taking the win in both the men's and women's races.
James Phillips has been in fine form in this race series: taking 4 wins out of the last 5 editions. Last night was probably his most impressive yet and was a perfect execution of team tactics. Throughout the race leading up to the sprint teammates Lionel Vujasin and Philipp Diegner all took turns attacking off the front to put pressure on the main peloton. Each little dig made it more and more difficult for a rumbling pack who were unsure of how to react. Then in the final kilometer it was all about the lead-out train which couldn't have gone better. James has a solid lead in the Series but we're only half-way through so anything could happen between now and the finish.
And check out the formation of the Canyon ZCC leadout train.
In the Women's race is was a completely different racing dynamic albeit with a similar outcome. Whittled down early on to just a small group, Kristin and Claudia slugged it out with some of the best racers in the women's peloton. Due to the smaller group it was a lot more cagey wth nobody wanting to show their cards too soon. It was at this moment that Kristin decided to strike first and momentarily caught Whitelaw and Nealon off-guard. Kristin held it all the way to the line to take the win and also move herself up to 2nd place in the overall League standings with 5 races left to go.
Next week we'll be back in Watopia and it'll be one for the climbers as we take on 5 laps of the Hilly Route. See you there!
